For the first time in over thirty years, Birkenstock named a new model after a Japanese city – and it wasn't by chance. Birkenstock Kyoto carries the name of Japan's cultural and historical heart, perfectly matching its character: it seamlessly combines the old with the new, an athletic look with the traditional comfort of Birkenstock. The silhouette quickly became a favorite choice for those wanting something bolder than the classic Arizona straps, without sacrificing comfort. The model has also appeared in limited and designer collaborations, further solidifying its status.

History: the first Japanese name in 34 years

Kyoto was introduced by Birkenstock in 2020 – it was the first model to bear the name of a Japanese city in approximately 34 years. The name perfectly captured the character of the silhouette, which combines athletic design with a suede upper into one fluid line suitable for everyday wear without losing comfort. Kyoto later saw a premium limited edition Kyoto Tradition made from fine deer leather, released in September 2024 to celebrate the brand's 250th anniversary, as well as a collaboration with the streetwear brand Concepts.

Technology: contoured footbed and double Velcro straps
